The oppression of Italian Jews began in 1938 with the enactment of Racial Laws of segregation by the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. I asked an Italian Jewish friend to describe the essence of Italian Jews in his experience. He wrote the following: "Growing up as an Italian Jew in the town of Borgosesia, and celebrating aspects of both traditions, my family often bridged the metaphorical gap with food - something which has tied together the two cultures in a harmony which has existed for well over two thousand years. Judaism has 4,000 years of history.
